Cinnaminson Township takes its name from the Lenni Lenape, the peaceful Algonquin Indian tribe also known as the “Delawares,” who first settled the area. The land comprising the Burlington County community was a hunting ground they called “Senamensing,” which means “Sweetwater” and refers to the sugar maple trees that used to grow there along the Delaware.
Originally part of the now-defunct Chester Township, Cinnaminson Township was created by an act of the New Jersey legislature in 1860.

From 1929 to 1957, Pennsauken was the home of Camden Central Airport, in 1931 said to be the world’s busiest. It was the main airfield serving Philadelphia, as the route to the city over the Delaware River Bridge was a faster way into Center City than an earlier airport south of Philadelphia. It served the city’s post office, and was the gateway to the area for many notables and celebrities, including aviation hero Charles Lindbergh. But by 1940, it proved to be too small for the later generation of larger planes, and by 1941 saw the end of airline traffic and its conversion to a US Navy aviation training site.

Our shop is on Chews Landing Road, which originally terminated at a dock on Timber Creek built by Richard Chew, a Quaker farmer and miller who moved to the area from Long Island in the late 1690s. Sicklerville, a section of Winslow Township in Camden County, NJ, takes its name from a German family who emigrated in 1754 and changed their name from “Ziegler” to “Sickler.” John Sickler, one of three brothers, credited with being the town’s first resident when he built a home in a thick forests and started a logging business. As the land was cleared of tress, the community’s main business changed from logging to farming.
In 1872, the town’s first railroad station was built, bearing the name “Sicklertown”. But when Paul Sickler, a descendant of the original Sicklers, opened the town’s first post office in his general store in 1874, the sign out front said “Sicklerville”. As a result, the town was known by both names for a number of years. The Sicklerville zip code also covers residents in neighboring Gloucester and Washington townships.

Glassboro is the home of Rowan University and the site of a June, 1967 summit meeting between President Lyndon Baines Johnson and Alexi Kosygin, premier of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Talks between the two leaders were held in Hollybush Mansion, on the campus of what was then called Glassboro State College. While not yielding any concrete results, the congenial three-day meeting improved relationships between the two countries in the midst of tensions over the Vietnam War and Arab-Israeli Six-Day War.
On June 19, 1986, President Ronald Reagan was the guest speaker at Glassboro High School’s graduation ceremonies. He was the first sitting U.S. president to address a graduating class of high school seniors.
